FAITHFUL FRIAR’S REPORT: Faithful Friar Fr. Gregor Goric
As we pray during this time of transition in the Diocese of Joliet, following Bishop Hicks’ farewell mass and upcoming move to New York, let us ask for a strong, faithful new bishop who will continue his work. Until then, an administrator will be appointed. The Knights of Columbus and all parishioners are encouraged to embrace the vision from Bishop Hicks’ pastoral letter and actively build and strengthen our church together. Every member—priests, deacons, laypeople—plays a vital role. I also asked Deacon Mike to share some prepared thoughts at this meeting.
FAITHFUL ASSOCIATE FRIAR’S REPORT: Dc. Mike Januszewski
As we conclude the Christmas season, I find it noteworthy that discussions about St. Joseph tend to diminish, despite his significance at the beginning of the narrative. My original homily, inspired by the phrase “for those who get it done,” drew parallels between St. Joseph’s actions and our responsibilities. While Mary’s spoken consent, or fiat, is well recognized—“let it be done unto me according to your word”—Joseph responded differently. Guided by an angel, he acted decisively without verbal affirmation; his obedience was demonstrated through immediate action.
This example holds relevance for us, especially as Knights, in understanding trust in God. Trust, as exemplified by Joseph, often requires silent commitment and steadfastness, even when circumstances do not improve immediately. The fulfillment of God’s promises in Scripture reinforces our confidence in Him; there are no instances where His word did not come to pass. However, trusting in God does not guarantee ease or comfort, as seen in Joseph’s continued challenges—undertaking difficult journeys and facing adversity. Rather, trust transforms our disposition, enabling us to face life’s challenges with resilience.
In summary, authentic trust in God is evidenced not by the absence of difficulties, but by a change in our outlook and the readiness to embrace His plan wholeheartedly. This, I believe, is an important message for us all.
DIGNITARY REPORTS: No Reports from any dignitaries
PSD Logan Ludwig: No Report
JOLIET CHAPTER PRESIDENT: MIKE MADONNA: No Report
FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR’S REPORT: Mike Madonna:
I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude to Council 16062, Father Ernie Norbeck Council, for hosting this evening’s meeting and for providing the excellent meal from Al’s Pizza. I also wish to thank all the brothers who joined us tonight.
I have received a correspondence that was sent to Wally from the Puzon family. It reads: “Perhaps you sent a lovely card or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a floral piece or if we saw it there. Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as any friends could say. Perhaps you were not all there but just thought of us today. Whatever you did to console our hearts, we thank you very much for your kindness and support. Sincerely, the family of Cayetano Puzon.”
Additionally, I must mention that Bill Schilli regrets his absence this evening due to an emergency at the Hollywood Theater regarding their heating system. He has asked me to remind everyone that more participants are needed for the Joliet Chapter Bowling event, which is scheduled to take place in two weeks. Currently, we have commitments from only five teams, while historically, participation ranges from sixteen to twenty teams. If your council is considering joining, or even if participation is uncertain at this time, please contact Bill. The registration form is available on Facebook, and I will ensure it is also accessible through our website. If you are unable to submit the form in advance, notify Bill directly so that your team can be included in the roster. Kindly remember to include your individual averages on the form.
FAITHFUL COMPTROLLER Submission of Bills: FC James Almeida
Worthy faithful navigator, gentlemen: Cards were sent out, and many payments have been received—thank you. We currently have 704 members. There was one recent death, Frederick Schutter, though he was no longer an active member. One new member has joined, balancing membership adjustment. Ernest Serrano is now correct in the system. We need updated addresses for Robert White and Gerald Simonelli; please contact me if you can help, as their mail was returned
Knights of the month: No report
REPORT OF COMMITTEES:
MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Mitch Raines New applicants for the fourth degree: Thomas Cook and Joseph Stout of Mayslake Council, David Wilson of Bishop James Fitzgerald council and John Krull of Father Ernie Norbeck council. After Saturday, January 17th, there will be a late fee for the February 7th Exemplification.
MASS CARDS: SK Wally Johnson PFN: Faithful Navigator. A mass card for Cayetano Puzon was sent out.
NEWSLETTER: Faithful Scribe Dennis Burke:
Traditionally, officers have contributed letters to the newsletter, which has been beneficial. However, as members of the 4th Degree—a patriotic degree within our Catholic organization—I propose we further honor our veterans by featuring interviews with the 4th Degree veterans in our council. For example, an interview with Augie Sisco, a Marine Corps veteran, is already available on our website. This piece summarizes his perspective on being both a Catholic and a veteran and offers valuable insights for others. We include service branch icons and photographs to recognize their contributions. I believe conducting such interviews monthly would be impactful and straightforward. Anyone interested in participating or assisting with these interviews is welcome to contact me—audio recordings are sufficient, and I am happy to handle the editing and posting process.
Additionally, I suggest we regularly introduce new members by publishing their names (and photos, if available) alongside our council information in the newsletter. I have compiled a current list and will post it once Jim provides guidance on the proper procedure.
Finally, we should showcase our activities, such as honor guards and color guards, with group photos and captions listing participants’ names. Recognizing members for their involvement in ceremonies, parades, exemplifications, and other events not only gives them deserved credit but also visually demonstrates the breadth of our council’s work. Submissions of event photos are encouraged; I will ensure they are acknowledged appropriately in the newsletter.
Engagement remains a challenge, with only a small percentage attending meetings or reading meeting notes. I am confident that a vibrant, photo-rich newsletter will foster greater member involvement. If you are interested in contributing or wish to discuss these ideas further, please email me at dubkoc093@gmail.com. Thank you for your consideration.
LADIES NIGHT OUT: Need Volunteer We’re still going to volunteer to run the Ladies Night Out. If you feel like running a committee, please talk to the Faithful Navigator or anyone else on board and we’ll help you with it as well.
HOSPITALITY: Mike Madonna and Bill Schelli III: No Hospitality for February 7th Exemplification because it is at a church this year.
AD BOOK: FN Mike Madonna: I made a mistake regarding the ad book deadline. I thought it was this Saturday, but it was the end of December. I received and shared incorrect information without verifying it, so missing the deadline is entirely my responsibility.
MEMORIAL MASS: Dc. Fred Maier: No Report
Veterans Committee: Mike Bruntz
We usually hold a picnic for Manteno in August or September and bingo in November, but bingo has been cancelled recently due to COVID-19. Since many of us participate in various veterans’ events around Veterans Day, we might consider changing the bingo date. After discussing with Manteno, we proposed an alternative to April 11th, Saturday after Easter. We could either keep bingo in November or move it to April.
Per assembly voice vote. April 11th will be scheduled for Bingo at Manteno and another date in the fall for a picnic. The assembly will book and budget two Manteno visits each fraternal year.
WIDOWS AND ORPHANS: WFN Mike Madonna: We still need a volunteer to run that program. If anybody wants to step up and run that program, let me know.
Pro Life: Need Volunteer.
New BUSINESS: Terry Foilard on former Friar Monsignor James Burnett
I usually invite him to our meetings, including tonight’s, but he’s had issues like physical therapy after breaking his arm. This time he responded, so I wanted to read his message to you.
“Thanks, Terry. I need to be realistic about my mobility—though I occasionally attend mass; I’m not as active as before. Given this, I believe my time with the Assembly has passed. I appreciate your support and friendship. Blessings to you all.” Monsignor James Burnett
Bill Barrett: Last night, I found an online post saying the Knights might reduce the number of council officers from 13 or 14 to just four: Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Secretary, and Treasurer. I wanted to make everyone aware of this possible change.
Mike Madonna: There’s been a rumor circulating for years, but nothing has moved forward. If any decision were made, it would need to pass through state resolution committees, conventions, and then Supreme for a vote. As far as I know, there’s no progress on this at this time.
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES:
